Entela was a student of mine at the time this was taken. Dr. Roberta Bondar, Canada’s first female astronaut and a highly accomplished photographer herself, came to visit our school. The students (all from countries other than Canada, at the school to learn English) didn’t know who she was before she came, but after she gave her presentation, they were falling all over each other to be photographed with her.
Someone decided that she should be photographed with Entela, then eight or so months pregnant, so that Entela’s son could have the picture someday. Dr. Bondar was more than happy to oblige. The pose was her idea.
Since her spaceflight in 1993, she has become highly skilled in landscape photography because of her desire to document the natural beauty of our planet. It was a thrill to meet her.
