Hi, I’ve had to resort to the morning after pill recently as the condom broke. I’m worried about what the possible long term effects may be… I heard someone say that it can damage your ability to conceive later on yet I’ve also heard that this was completely false. Can I please get someone’s expert or true opinion on it’s long term effects?

  1. Brutally Honest says:

Plan B (EC) is essentially the same type of hormones as found in birth control pills, only in higher doses.

EC will NOT effect your future ability to conceive, as it does nothing to your physiology, beyond causing your body to reject the POTENTIALLY fertilized ovum and prevent implantation (and thereby pregnancy).

It should not damage your ability to conceive later on, but I surely wouldn’t be using it as a form of birth control either! I’m sure it can start to become hazardous in some for or fashion if you are taking it every other month. Get on birth control, so that you don’t have to continue using the morning after.

The morning after pill (Plan B) stops you from ovulating that one time only, and does not affect your future ability to ovulate. If you had already ovulated within three days of the condom-breaking incident, you could still be pregnant, but Plan B is way better than doing nothing. In future, I would make sure he is using the right size condom. Also make sure he leaves a little space in the end (for the ejaculate) when he puts on the condom.

  4. Syuzi says:

Emergency contraception is a high dosage of the hormones estrogen and progestin [levonorgestrel] , almost the same active ingrediants as regular birth control pills, but a higher dose.

There are some short term side effects such as nausea and vomitting, which get worse everytime you use EC especially in the same month, because it is meant to be used as EMERGENCY.

However, there are no long term side effects. That is 100 percent untrue. Women who take birth control everyday for ten years are still able to concieve, taking EC when accidents occur has absolutely no effect on a womans fertility or ability to conceive.
