I don’t get it. Vasectomies are suppose to be permanent. If there’s a chance a woman might become pregnant, why don’t the doctors just remove a large segment of the vas (or remove it completely) instead of a small piece?
Vasectomy may be the safest, most effective kind of birth control. Only about 15 out of 10,000 couples get pregnant the first year after a vasectomy, But it is possible, I know a couple who had two children after he got a vasectomy and yes they are his.
The rate of pregnancy after a vasectomy os 0.002 % according to the AMA. The reason that Dr.s don’t take a larger section is because the nerve that controls bladder function lies along the vas, and is easily damaged during the surgery. The chances of a woman getting preggers after the cut is so small that you should run, not walk, to your nearest doctor for a paternity test.

Now they not only remove a section of the vas but cauterize or clamp the ends. Hey it is never an exact science and the human body has an amazing will to heal itself and procreate so you mess with that and you have the potential for trouble.
I think that they are getting better at this (adding the burning of the vas or the clips) as they saw from the earlier surgeries that there were some issues there.
It isn’t given a 100% effective rating for a reason, little known fact, did you know the Mirena IUD is actually now rated equal to the protection of a tubal litigation.
They are as effective as the pill taken exactly as instructed, which is 99% effective. Doctors do disclose this when you are going through the decision process, and this is also why you go back a couple of months after the procedure to have your sperm count tested.
To protect themselves, doctors will inform you that there is a very slim chance that sperm could get through. In this situation I would this:
1: Have a sperm count done.
2: Have a paternity test done on the child.
It may seem cruel that these steps leads to an indication that she may have strayed however, it is better to know for sure; before you end up supporting a child that does not belong to you.
They grow back together – it happens (but not often). That would seriously suck. I am 46 and my husband had the ‘BIG V’ 13 years ago. I would NOT want to have a baby now (and the women in my family can get pregnant late – my grandma had one of my Aunts at my age and one of my Aunts had kids until past my age, she has 12 kids…).

well it does happen. Vasectomies are typically very effective but there’s always a slim chance that the little buggers will get thru. I think that they don’t remove large segments or remove it completely because it would affect the rest of the function ‘down there’ and not only that I imagine it would then become a rather invasive surgery whereas now it’s not as invasive.
Go to medical school and see for yourself how it all works and why it’s done the way it is and if you find a better way to do it then *poof* you’ll be considered brilliant.

There is a very small chance of a woman getting pregnant after her husband has had a vasectomy, same with a woman getting pregnant after having her "tubes tied". But yes it can happen.
You would have to ask the Dr.s why they don’t remove all the "parts"..Probably not medically safe too.
A DNA test would likely prove one of two possibilities: (1) someone else was a sperm donor, besides the vasectomy patient or (2) the doctor that performed the vasectomy committed malpractice.
The third option is, the man lied about getting a vasectomy. But my answer assumes he got a vasectomy.

@#$% happens man. My husband got a vasectomy years ago. We’ve not had a problem. It is a rare case when the surgery corrects itself. (very small %) It does happen though. That would #$% me off! Seriously.
It can & has happened especially if you have sex right after the surgery OR if there is an incomplete vasect. done – in which case the man should go verify things are FULLY done at his doctor. BUT yes I have heard of this happening – or you know the other alternative of course which isn’t a pleasant one!

Modern medical practices do call for a section to be removed not just cut.
I do not know the medical reasons why they do not remove large sections.
Maybe it heals worse, maybe it’s just never been done so the effects are unknown.

There is a surgery to reverse a vasectomy – it’s costly and insurance doesn’t cover it. There are also a small number of cases where a vasectomy can heal and reverse itself – and I call that an act of God LOL
