My dog could be pregnant, I took her to the vet at 40 days, and the vet said she couldnt feel anything, and that it could be a false pregnancy, but around 52 days, she got a lot bigger around the lower chest area and a little bigger around the abdomen, were not sure if she is pregnant, or what is going on? and if so could she give birth early? or around what time?
and I am not going to do an emergency spay, she doesn’t need it and a false pregnancy isn’t going to risk her life.

Normal gestation time for a dog is 62 – 64 days. You need to watch her close. If she has pups, have her spayed as soon as she weans the pups; If she’s not, have her spayed ASAP.

If it’s a false pregnancy, of course she will be getting bigger.

Take her back to the vet and get a professional opinion on this. I suggest you get an emergency spay.

ADD: No it won’t kill her, but where does that come into it? If she IS pregnant and you let her have the puppies that means the risk you lose her during whelping and another litter of puppies a a world that already has a serious problem with dog overpopulation. For every pup that is born, that is one home taken away for the dogs that really need it – the ones in shelters. What gives your puppies the right to have a home over the ones in shelters that have suffered enough already? Also, an unspayed bitch is more prone to life-threatening uterine cancers and infections so if you want her to live a good, long, happy and healthy life, do the right thing and spay her!

She’s far enough along to be xrayed to know for sure. I hope you’ve been proceeding as if she was pregnant this whole time, and at the point are well-versed in whelping & caring for mom & pups if you have to step in & help, or there’s an emergency

Such are perfect things you should have known BEFORE irresponsibly allowing your dog to breed.

sounds like she is pregnant. Day 58 is as early as a safe delivery and survival can be made. At least that is what all the books say. I don’t like my girls to go before 60 days.

  6. Jennifer says:

63 days is normal gestation. 10 days before you should be able to identify puppies on an x ray. Even with a false, she can have milk, will nest and even steal a stuffed toy and try to nurse it.

And a false pregnancy "can" be dangerous for your dog. Those who have false pregnancies seem to be more prone to pyometra. This can be fatal if undetected ( closed pyo ) and generally manifests about 3 or 4 months after the heat cycle. An open pyo is easily detected by the foul odor but a closed pyo has little warning. Many dogs don’t survive the surgery because the infection has compromised their system and they become septic.
