My boyfriend and I want to have a baby and we are anxious to see whether or not I am. How many weeks do you have to be before a home pregnancy test can detect it? I know they say they have some tests that can detect it 5 days before your first missed period, however mine are somewhat irregular, I had two last month, one the first week and one the last week, haven’t had one for this month yet… also would like to know what that could mean… anywawy I’d appreciate the help!

  1. Kimberly C says:

Implantation occurs 6-10 days after conception (which could be up to 5 days after sex, depending on when you ovulate) and hormone is released right after the fertilized egg implants. So I’d say about two weeks. If your periods are irregular, I’m going to assume that you don’t know when you’re ovulating if you’re ovulating at all. If you had a period the last week of January, I’m going to say that you could take a test at the end of next week at the earliest, since you probably won’t get your period until the week after that.

You could test earlier but you might get a negative reading if you are pregnant.

    Good luck!

You can probably test two weeks after you and your boyfriend had sex. It depends if you know when you were ovulating or not.

  3. Bird Flippin' expecting #2 says:

You can test 14 days after unprotected sex, or wait until the longest length between cycles to test.

My periods were always some what irregular, and with both my pregnancies I found out around between 3-4 weeks. First was at 3wk1day and second was at 4wks exactly. Probably could’ve tested sooner if I had known to :-) Are yours normally closer together like last month (such as every 3 weeks)? If so, I’d wait another week before testing… and if you are really TTC, your ovulation will probably be earlier than the ‘average’ so I’d start marking your periods on the calendar in the process to try to figure out more of a pattern.
