I was just wondering how likely it is to get Preeclampsia in a subsequent pregnancy. I went in for a routine ob visit at 31 weeks & was shocked when they told me i had protein in my urine and high blood pressure. I was put on bed rest that day & had to go get lab work done. I was induced at 37 weeks & am now pregnant with my second child but am only 18 weeks & would like to know others experiences.

Thanks.

    What Makes Pre-Eclampsia More Likely?

    The following can predispose you to developing pre-eclampsia, but many cases occur without any risk factors at all.

    * If it is your first pregnancy
    * Pre-eclampsia in a previous pregnancy
    * Age under 20 years or over 35 years
    * Short stature
    * If you suffer from migraines
    * Family history of pre-eclampsia or eclampsia
    * Previous hypertension
    * If you have Raynaud’s disease
    * If you are underweight
    * If you have systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE)
    * Multiple pregnancy (eg. twins)
    * Hydatidiform mole

    Most younger women who have preeclampsia do not get it again unless certain conditions are present such as kidney problems or multiples. However, if you are in your 30s and have pre-eclampsia, you are at risk of having it recur because age is a factor that only increases.

    I asked my Obgyn the same question for this pregnancy.
    He said that pre-eclampsia can be more likely to recur in women that have had it before however it will be a lot later. I had pre-eclampsia at 38 weeks. He said that if I were to get it this time it would be at about 50 weeks which by then the baby will be well and truly out! In your case, you had it a lot earlier than me but I would still not worry too much.
    Basically, if you are going to get it again, it would likely be weeks later than last time :)
    I am now 35 weeks on baby number two and so far have not had any signs of pre-eclampsia.
