My wife just got pregnant and we were wondering if sugar free gums and diet sodas were good for her to drink. Or other stuff with artificial sweeteners like splenda.

I have a brochure from my doctor’s office of things okay to eat or not and when it comes to sugar this is what it says:

honey and all artificial sweeteners all carry risks to pregnant women. If you need something sweet, the best thing to have is regular sugar. (in moderation of course) so I would stick to regular soft drinks and regular gum because the worst that can happen with that is she will gain a few pounds-but no risk of damage to the baby.

    NO!!!!

  3. Claire says:

To be honest, I have no idea, but it might be good for her to stay away from stuff like that just to be on the safe side. After all, those artificial sweeteners are basically…chemicals. Or if she doesn’t want to consume sugar, I’d say that artificially sweetened things are OK in moderation.

they are fine it’s better than real sugar she does need 300 extra calories per day, but not from sugar

  5. Steph says:

Splenda is fine, I forgot what the fancy name for that on is, but even then… Just don’t over do it.

Asparatame on the other hand? Well, they say it’s okay to have a little bit, but I’m totally avoiding it.

  6. DS says:

No. It’s not good for the baby or her. Sugar free gum is okay.

A woman can have the equivilant of 16 cans of soda with aspertame before it becomes harmful.

I don’t trust artificial sweeteners even when i’m not pregnant lol. There’s too much speculation about all of them and it seems they never figure out what stuff can do to you until it’s too late. Just stick with plain natural sugar. Drink juices and water, it’s alot healthier!

  9. Mommyluv says:

Artificial sweeteners are nothing but pure chemicals which can’t be healthy for your baby. Studies have shown that some of them can lead to cancers in animals. They aren’t good for anyone, pregnant or not. I have avoided them at all costs with both my pregnancies. One tsp of sugar only has 15 calories, I’d rather be safe and have the few extra calories!

  10. Hardcorë_Mom Baby #2 Brewing says:

Splenda is the safest artificial sweetner (*I* know of)because it doesn’t contain saccarin, an additive which I heard can cause cancer among other things. I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy and I used Splenda as a sugar subsitute, which was okayed by my doctor and nutritionist.

    HTH!
    -Personal experience.

No, I was told to make sure I stay away from them. That’s why you’re told to not drink diet drinks whatsoever when pregnant because they have artificial sweetners.
