My girlfriend says that even though it was 4 days after her period that we had sex there’s still a high chance she can get pregnant. She even went so far as to say she’s more likely to get pregnant. Someone please clear this up for me. Is there any chance what she says is true and what’s the truth?

She can still get pregnant, but it’s more likely while she’s on her period. I would take a test just to be sure, but it’s not really all that likely, don’t worry hun.

The truth is that there is a chance she can get pregnant at anytime of the month.

It’s hard to tell you who’s right from who’s wrong not knowing how long her cycle is. Having said this, there is a HIGH chance when she is ovulating/fertile about mid-way through her cycle, roughly 2 weeks before she expects her following period.

So basically, sex soon after her period has ended is typically one of the safest times. But if she has a really short cycle, say 25 days, and she bleeds for 6 days, four days later, meaning the 10th day is actually really close to the time she’s about to ovulate, and sperm can live in her body for nearly a week.

There’s so much to consider, so the answer to all worries is to use reliable contraception :)

    I hope this helps some.

Actually, yes, your chances are very high.
Starting about 3 or 4 days at the end of menstruation, varying on the length of her cycles, a woman will begin to enter her fertile time, ovulating usually about 10-15 days after the end of menstruation.
You are fertile for about 7 or 8 days around your time of ovulation, before and after.
On top of this, semen can survive inside a woman’s system for up for 5-7 days when she is not menstruating and thus can fertilize her egg even if intercourse did not occur when she was most fertile.
You chance of pregnancy is relatively high.
You picked one of the worst times of the month to have unprotected sex although there is absolutely time during a woman’s cycle when your chances of pregnancy are low if not using protection.

You should immediately purchase an ECP, emergency contraceptive pill, to help prevent fertilization while there is still time.

But hey, why would that matter when you guys are using condoms every time to prevent STDs and pregnancy?

  5. ash says:

A woman usually ovulates about 2 weeks from the day she starts her period. So four days after would be getting close to that time frame. She’s correct in saying this, although women do not always follow a set schedule of ovulation, she could ovulate any time during the month

Yes, say she started her period on the 10th, the 23rd and 24th would be her most fertile days.

How about next time, you be more careful and learn your facts.
