I recently found out that my mother (who smokes all the time now) smoked while she was pregnant with me and each of my younger sisters. She says the only harm would be a low birth weight, but that it was okay since all three of us were a healthy weight when we were born. Are there any lasting health effects I should be on the watch for?

Baby’s asthma risk isn’t the only reason not to smoke while pregnant. Besides damaging the woman’s body, smoking during pregnancy can also:
Lower the amount of oxygen the baby gets
Increase the baby’s heart rate
Increase the chances of miscarriage and stillbirth
Increase the chances of premature birth and/or low birth weight
Raise the baby’s risk of developing lung problems
Smoking may also damage the fetus’s genes, damage the fetus’s genes, according to a study in the March 9 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.
My mom smoked when she was pregnant with me and my sister, and we both have very mild asthma and I have allergies – whether or not that’s due to her smoking, who knows for sure, but I think there’s a chance.
I really don’t know all the symptoms all I know that it is very bad. You get sick all the time. Low birth weight. Health problems. Etc. The best person to talk to about this is your OB or the doctor.
you’re fine.
Ive always wondered this. for many of us, our parents were of a generation that drank, smoked, and were very physically active uptil they delivered and we all turned out fine. I am not advocating smoking and drinking during pregnancy but I am just saying that when you look at all the things they tell you will "scar your child for life", not of those things happened to us. My mom smoked and I was almost 9 pounds. Im not advocating – just saying that I am not 100% sold on the fact that all of things they tell us not to do are really that bad for us.
I think you would have seen the effects at a very young age if there were any, but smoking while pregnant can be very harmful to a child. I think by now you would know if anything was wrong with you or not, luckily it seems that you were not affected by it.
"The main well-known risks of smoking in pregnancy — pre-maturity/low-birth weight, miscarriage, stillbirth — are not related to birth defects per se, but we mention the above just to reassure you that the first days after conception aren’t a particularly high-risk time."

adhd
low birth weight
still born
asthma
low birth weight is the only PROVEN cause. However, there is evidence toward many others (like Asthma).
I wouldn’t worry too much they say that within days of quiting smoking your lungs begin to clear and you start to get better lung function. If you are older and don’t already have asthma, allergies, constant sickness or anything like that I think you don’t have too much to worry about. But I would do everything to get her to stop smoking and to stay away from her while she smokes. Also people who say oh well I smoked and my kids came out fine are lucky, many children (see the below web sites) don’t. If you are so selfish that you can’t give up something that could in turn kill you unborn baby then that is just sad. I know I smoked before I got pregnant with my first and never looked back!!! I thank my lucky stars I got pregnant in the long run it could extend my life years!
well i had a neighbor who smoked a lot during both of her pregnancy and her first born had a heart murmur and needed a lot of surgeries after birth. ANd the 2nd born was not as active as other babies and needed a few surgeries and more to come.
