Let me further explain: my cousin is pregnant with two babies that were conceived at two seperate times. One baby is 9 1/2 weeks and the other is 8 weeks. I know fraternal and identical twin conception happens at the same time, but this did not happen with my cousin, so would these two babies be considered twins? What is this situation called?

It’s called "superfetation" and it’s very rare.

In cases like this all fraternal twins are made technically at different times. The only cases I have ever heard of was a matter or hours…maybe a day at most. If it is the US that is telling her those dates it is usually because one twin grows slower then the other or is just smaller. I have never heard of babies being made weeks apart.

ETA- I Stand corrected. I guess it can happen a week later. Hm. Who knew?

its called superfetation, and its a very rare occurence, but your cousin should feel very special to have had it happen to her. her babies are unique! i have identical twins, and i think that is unique all in itself but THIS is really cool! what happens is two eggs are released (fraternal twins definitley) and one egg gets fertilzed at one time, but the other egg doesn;t get fertilized until a few days later…it can be from the same bunch of sperm, or from two different men sperm…either way its an awesome occurence, and she should be grateful that its happening to her! congrats!
