I am 4 months pregnant with twins. Every mother of twins that I have met since getting pregnant has ended up on bed rest towards the end of the pregnancy. Although I think the idea of a couple of days in bed sounds wonderful, I can’t take that many extra days off of work financially. Are there any tricks to avoid ending up on bed rest while pregnant?

Unfortunately with twins, there’s little you can do to avoid it.
With a single pregnancy, exercise and diet control can help reduce health risks. However, multiple births are already considered a moderate risk and are often preterm.

Bed rest isn’t fun, as most mothers who’ve been on bed rest can tell you. It’s great for the first day or so but then it gets really boring. You’re not allowed to get up except to go to the bathroom. And you’re generally required to rest/sleep in a particular position. Laying in bed all the time will cause you to be very, very sore.

As for affording to be on bed rest, this should be covered under medical leave (or long term disability). Your company should pay you a portion of your salary while you’re on bed rest. Speak with your HR person.
Try to save some $ and PTO/Vacation time now. From my experience, the first two weeks on medical leave were unpaid – Luckily I had vacation time saved to get us through this period. After the two weeks my company paid me about 60% of my salary through out the remainder of the pregnancy and during maternity leave.
Funds weren’t as tight as I expected: By not going to work, I saved on gas. I was cooking more, so food was cheaper. With a new baby I didn’t go out as much so entertainment and general spending wasn’t as bad.

Worst case scenerio, consider a line of credit to get you by.

Since you have a ways to go, start compling a list of things to do while on bed rest: take up knitting or similar hobby, consider a netflix subscription, magazines/books, et cetera.

Talk to your doc and see what position (side or reclined back) he’ll have you in to find out which hobbies you can do.

    Good luck!

TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF, DON’T over do anything!

but unfortunately some times you body just can’t handle pregnancy well and then you will have to go on bed rest. nothing you can really do about it.

I worked with a girl who had twins in september and when I left in late August she was still working. We had a desk job, I think she did not stress out a lot and just made sure she had plenty of rest.

The best thing to do to stay away from best rest is to be active. Go for a walk everyday. Drink a lot of water also. I would put a slice of lemon in my water to make it a bit easier to drink. Eat a healthy diet that consists of whole grains, veggies, friuts, and lean meats.

Best of wishes to you. I give you kudos already!
