I have been on birth control for about 8-9 years. I am getting married next year, in May and would like to start trying for a baby right away. What is everyones opinion on when I should stop taking the birth control (after talking to my fiance of course), and if you were on birth control how long did it take you to conceive?

If it is the pill, my doctor advised me to stop after I finish the pack I was on, go through one cycle using condoms, then go ahead and try for that next cycle.

I think it is a good idea to go for a preconception check up just make sure everything is healthy. I told my obgyn my husband and I wanted to get pregnant soon at an annual check up so in addition to the pelvic exam, they checked my cholesterol, titers for measles and hepatitis and some other stuff to make sure I didn’t need any vaccinations. I think the measles or one of those things can be particularly bad for mother and or baby in pregnancy. I’d get your doctor’s advice on when to conceive.

http://www.babycenter.com has an ovulation caluclator that can give you the optimal days to conceive. You can also tell by the consistency of cervical mucous and you temperature if you want to keep extensive records or have a great memory.

    Good luck!

Edit: I conceived the first month we tried, but I knew about when I was ovulating, too. It also depends on your cycle’s regularity, your age, etc.

I’de stop a couple of months before the wedding, that way you have a head start on your fertility, and if you fall straight away, wont be showing at the wedding.

If you dont want to conceive until after the wedding then wait until the wedding to stop I stopped my pills and was pregnant within 3 months after stopping, and I was taking the pill for over 5years that time. Good Luck to you!

I was on the pill for 10 years and then conceived 4 months after stopping.

If you are currently taking a birth control pill, the recommended suggestion is 2 months. After the 2 month mark of being off the pill and having regular periods – it will then be okay for you to start conceiving.

The conceiving part though is not that easy. For me, it only took the one time! Yeah – my husband was bummed out we didn’t get to "practice" more. But for many other women, it can take a good couple of months to even a year, or longer. The conceiving part is up to your body and God of course. After several months of attempts if you are still not pregnant, I would go ask your OB to have some tests run to be sure you (or your husband for that matter) are fertile and all looks well.

Consult your doctor if you want to conceive soon after your wedding. You might need to have pap smear test to make sure that everything will go well. Good luck.

some people find it hard to conceive right after coming off of the pill and for some they will conceive right away
i think your best bet is to ask your doctor what he thinks

I was on the pill for almost 10 years when I finally decided to start a family. My doctor said that it was okay to start trying immediately after stopping the pill. So I did, and I got pregnant not even a month later.
