What is it about being older that makes it harder for a woman to conceive, even if she has ordinary periods? Also, why is it that there are often more problems with the baby (like an increased risk of Downs Syndrome for example) ? I am just curious, especially as I am not wanting to have children until my mid 30s.

  1. Trust me I'm a Doctor ♥ says:

All the eggs a woman ever produces are present in her ovaries when she is born. So imagine these eggs are around for a very long time before she actually gets pregnant. Between 15 and 25 is the most fertile time for women and the time that conceiving and birth should be easiest for them.

I know 15 seems too young in the eyes of our money driven society where we are supposed to marry and earn money to be able to afford to have children but this is why teenage girls have periods, they are ready to become pregnant as nature knows this is the best time physically for them. Society decrees that 15 is far too young, they are "children" still but realistically we are not far removed from the great apes and once puberty is reached that is the signal that your body is ready to reproduce.

By the time you are 40 those eggs are starting to decrease in quantity and quality, some months an egg might not be released from the ovary so conceiving gets harder and due to the poorer quality of the eggs birth defects can become more common.

As you get older, your eggs will become less fertile as they were when you was 20. Its not anyones fault its just nature. Hope that helps. X
