I over heard some ladies talking about the importance of knowing your blood type before you conceive a baby. Whats that all about? They said something about birth defects. My husband and I are hoping to conceive within the next couple months.
I am RH negative and i had to have the rhogam shot incase the baby is Positive….if you and your hubby are the same like pos etc you wont need to get the shot…

What is Rh incompatibility?
In cases of Rh incompatibility, a baby’s red blood cells have a substance called the Rh D factor, and the mother’s blood cells do not. In medical terms, the baby is Rh positive and you are Rh negative. If some of the baby’s red blood cells leak into your system, your body may produce antibodies to the Rh D factor (a condition called sensitization). These antibodies can cross the placenta and destroy the red blood cells in your unborn baby or in the next Rh-positive baby you have.
You do not need to know your blood types prior to conception. When you do concieve and go for your first prenatal visit, they will test your blood type. If you are Rh negative, you will need Rhogam. Rhogam is given around 28 weeks gestation, and then after delievery if necessary, so it doesn’t matter if they check your blood type now, or after you get pregnant. Either way there will be plenty of time to give you the Rhogam shot.
If the baby’s father’s blood type is also negative, then Rh incompatibility is not a factor, but few health care providers will take a chance on a woman lying or being mistaken about the paternity of the child. They figure better safe than sorry.
If you are Rh positive, it doesn’t matter whether the baby’s is Rh positive or Rh negative. It is only if you are Rh negative that there is a risk.
During childbirth, a small bit of the baby’s blood will get in your blood stream. If the baby has a different type than you, it can be dangerous.
I know that in Mexico (where my husband is from) they do blood tests for people about to get married, to make sure they don’t have the same blood type. They believe that if you do then your baby will have birth defects or health problems. We got married here in the USA, so we never had a blood test and our children turned out fine.
If you are RH negative and your husband is not in the later stages of pregnancy you’ll need a shot to prevent potential issues in case your baby is not RH negative. I’m RH + so I’ve never had to worry about it, so I don’t know the full story, I just know it has to do with the RH not in your blood.
Rh+ and Rh- is what they are looking at with "blood types". if you and the baby have different poles +/- you can’t carry the child because the blood type causes your blood to "kill" the other blood type… BUT, if it is caught EARLY they can give you shots… i can’t remember what the shot is called, but it helps to keep you from aborting the fetus. ASK YOUR DOCTOR he can give you both lab orders for the test.
It is more important to find out yours than it is your husband….reason being if you are rh negative and your baby is positive your body can treat it as an invasion and kill the baby off. It does not matter if the babies blood type is different( All 3 of my girls have A blood types 2 are positive 1 is negative and I have O+)
where i live (MS) they make you take blood tests before you get your marriage license to make sure there won’t be a conflict.
I am RH negative,,,,,,,,, I have had 3 miscarriages
and I don’t think I can have any more babys, because I think, my body has developed antibodies,,,, I missed a rogham shot………
plus I can only have 3 babys total because I have to have c-sections,,,because all my babys get stuck in my hip-bones because I am really tiny…….. and you can only have 3 c-sections,,,you uturus gets weak,,,,,,,and then you start to have miscarriages.
